about us
everything begins in the natural biological farms of Latvia
MADARA's journey begins in one of five biological farms of Latvia. The "heart" of MADARA's products is born here - various plants, berries, flowers.
These farms are officially certified (EEC Regulation No. 2092/91) and this means that all agriculture products are grown biologically, in a natural environment, they do not leave an impact on nature and their growth is not being artificially stimulated here. They are regularly inspected by "Environment quality" which certifies biological farms in Latvia; meanwhile the farms are also being supervised by other higher environmental organizations.
Latvia was selected as the birthplace of plants used in MADARA's products also for patriotic purposes - we have always supported local farmers, manufacturers and other local entrepreneurs. Yet there are other important reasons - first of all, the necessary plants grow here, beside us, it is not needed to transport them to a far-off location, thus no additional emissions from trucks or aircraft pollute the atmosphere; secondly - the plants that grow in the Northern climate are particularly vigorous, with a highly concentrated composition. For example, raspberries grown in France will always differ from the ones grown in Latvia for the latter will be much more concentrated due to the cool climate and longer wintering.
The more the active ingredients or "the plant itself", the better! That is why plants in the farms are dried and gathered in a special way in order to retain the highest possible quality of plant ingredients. The greatest challenge is to dry the plants quickly but not at a high temperature. For example, it is already accustomed to dry chamomile in haylofts or cocklofts accessed by strong drafts and the air is sufficiently warm. Cornflowers, on their part, if dried quickly and effectively, retain their intensive blue color, while they become discolored if sundried.
A certain part of each plant, or as we call it - herb, is collected. For example, only flowerheads of chamomile, rootstocks of sweet flags and hips of sweetbriars are gathered. Fresh raspberries, cucumbers and tomatoes are processed separately.
then plants are turned into extracts
After gathering and preparing all herbs (including drying), they travel to a Latvian extraction factory packed in special respiring food bags where they will experience their second rebirth - extracts will be made out of them.
This takes place in voluminous reactors where herbs spend a certain time with their extractives. Two principal compositions are used in MADARA products - oil extracts made out of biologically grown sunflower oil, and spirit extracts - mixtures of water, natural spirit and natural glycerine. Differentiation takes place because the substances and vitamins contained in herbs are not alike - some tend to dissolve and extract better in oil (for example, vitamins A and E), but others (such as vitamins B and C) are apt to better extraction in a water and spirit environment. A method that allows attaining the extract that would be greatest in amount and most intensive in consistence is applied. It should be especially pointed out that for example, only 20 - 50 milligrams can be extracted from 20 kilograms of herbs that is why selection of the most suitable method is so important.
The acquired extract is a dark, thick and concentrated solution that bears the composition of the herb - all the best properties that it has.
further on to MÁDARA production unit
Now the "heart" of the plant - as we call it - goes to MADARA production unit. It is located in Latvia of course, in the quiet Pārdaugava (2 Šampētera Street).
It is a very modern production unit with powerful, energy saving equipment and reactors - the kind that even some widely known manufacturers of cosmetics could envy us for. High hygiene and cleanness standards are observed here. In order to avoid perishability of substances used in the manufacturing process, it is necessary to provide a microbiologically clean environment. For this reason we use active oxygen which kills bacteria in the air and on all surfaces. This is one of the safest methods also used in surgery blocks of highly advanced hospitals. This is the environment where finished products - creams, lotions, soaps - are manufactured of original recipes, developed by MADARA.
the product from an idea to the store shelf
The recipes of products are developed by us; they are not purchased or acquired from others. A laboratory is established in MADARA production unit where chemists work out the principal formulae - their task is to develop a stable, imperishable combination of substances that is convenient to apply and easily absorbed by skin.
Then pharmacists select an extract - active substance of Baltic herbs in order to attribute it with specific properties - for example, anti-cellulite, regenerating or moisturizing ones. We usually cooperate with Professor Vija Eniņa, dean of Faculty of Pharmacy of Riga Stradiņš University, a person with extensive experience with medicative herbs for both - internal and external use and who provides us with outstanding ideas on combinations of active ingredients.
The products do not consist only of herbal extracts, of course. Other substances are used as well - herb oils, butters, waxes, emulsifiers and essential oils - scents. However none of the mentioned ingredients are synthetic or chemical, no preservatives - synthetic preserving substances are added to the products. Everything that comes even into the slightest contact with the final products of MADARA is of a natural origin - all of them are plants grown in a natural environment and the extracts are acquired in a natural way, just like with the chamomile dried in the cockloft of a biological farm. Unfortunately, not all substances and plants used in MADARA products are acquired in our country, since such things as cocoa and jojoba beans are not grown in Latvia.
When chemists in cooperation with pharmacists have sketched an idea, it is developed practically in our laboratory; it is appraised, cultivated and perfected until such a recipe is acquired that is able to satisfy everyone. Then, voluntaries start testing the products under the supervision of dermatologists; also other properties of the new product are determined in physical and chemical tests; an expiry date as well as other qualities is established.
inspections, testing and certification
Testing and certification is an essential part of our daily work. All raw materials - each chamomile extract or sweetflag rootstock concentrate - arriving in the production unit are inspected; each batch of finished products is surveyed before packaging as well.
We record all batches of raw materials and finished products in order for us to be able to determine where the extracts or substances used for the particular product have come from. Samples of all raw materials and finished products are stored in our bank of samples in order to carry out repeated tests in case of necessity.
And of course there are inspections of the production unit itself - an inspector from France visits MADARA production unit and the factory where the extracts are made for our products on an annual basis in order to survey raw materials, finished products, manufacturing documentation, accountancy data, invoices, etc...
packaging
When the product is finished and results of testing are pleasing, it is time for packaging using a beautifully designed, user friendly format typical for MÁDARA . We are mostly using vacuum bottles taking care for special protection against bacteria that during the product use can have an adverse impact on products or even damage them. The product packaging is ordered from Germany, Netherlands, England and France.
MÁDARA packaging is environment friendly and can be recycled. We pride ourselves on printing packaging, booklets and visual materials on FSC certified paper produced from renewable wood-pulp resources at one of the most environmentally friendly paper mill in the world – at AB Munken Dals located in the nature park, Sweden.
to the store shelves
And finally here comes the moment when the finished, organic and moreover – beautifully packaged products find their way to people – to the shops!
In Latvia MÁDARA goods one can find at one of the three MÁDARA shops (at Trading Centres „Alfa", „Spice", „Galerija Centrs"), at „Kolonna" shops, at Shopping Centre „Stockmann" and at almost all bio- and eco product shops. Outside Latvia MÁDARA cosmetics is available at eco and beauty shops in more than 20 different countries worldwide.
in conclusion
Since its establishing in July, 2006 MÁDARA within three years has grown from five employees to the staff of 30 people. They are the top marketing and design specialists, chemists and other professionals – experts of their field. And it's not in vain – mainly owing to the professional team MÁDARA has gained such success. The other basic values of the company are design with Latvian touch and Latvian origin we are so much proud of, beauty and design and, of course, ecology.
We care for nature not only formally – we are recognized as the greenest enterprise in Latvia; we have been sorting garbage since the very beginning of our company, in our daily life we are using recycled office paper, in its turn the detergent specifically produced by MÁDARA is being used for office and production unit cleaning.
